Last year , Alberta government launched water-sharing negotiations as the province eyed another significant drought.
The agreements were only for 2024 , and the province says they were “always intended as a last resort” The Bow River Irrigation District is at its normal winter storage levels, but those levels have improved significantly in another irrigation southern Alberta district.
The City of Lethbridge was among the municipalities that signed a water-sharing agreement last year .
It's encouraging reservoir levels are higher than they were at this time last year , but it's too early for the municipality to discuss the possibility of water sharing agreements.
“We are still waiting for snow and moisture data, and we expect to begin discussions with the province in the next four weeks or so,” says the City.
