Politicians, aware of a looming election, have wrapped themselves in the flag.
Five former prime ministers have called for Canadian unity.
Douglas : "Patriotism wasn’t something that ever really resonated with me and I was very ignorant about the totality of Canadian history when we made the ad’s.
He says a “blind” shift towards patriotism doesn't serve the broader goals of fixing injustices.
“I think that we can still be proud. We just have to be aware and then being aware of the wrongs of the past and the continuing wrongs in the present,” he said.
