The city is cutting down more than 200 trees along Memorial Drive in order to accommodate construction of a flood barrier in Sunnyside this summer .
Many of the trees were planted more than a century ago in memory of soldiers who died during the First World War .
The 2.4-kilometre flood berm will protect the communities of Hillhurst and Sunside from a once-every-century flooding event.
The city’s original design would have required the removal of 700 to 900 trees.
“While the removal of trees was necessary in order to achieve this level of protection, we are pleased that the city has committed to planting 250 new trees including Memorial Poplar clones,” she said in a statement. “We continue to work with the city in shaping the public areas that are impacted by this project and are valued by Calgarians , particularly those living in Hillhurst Sunnyside ..
