Researchers asked 830 people, almost a fifth of whom had previously had couples therapy, to look at responses to relationship issues provided by either a therapist or ChatGPT.
People correctly said a response had come from a therapist just 56 per cent of the time.
AI was given training in which it was told empathy is key in couples therapy.
Authors note that this was only hypothetical therapy, and it might not apply to individuals.
