BBC investigation uncovers allegations Shell ignored repeated warnings over oil clean-up.

Clean-up scheme set up by government and funded by oil firms to the tune of $ 1bn ( 805 m) Shell has repeatedly stated that work to clean up sites of oil-contaminated sites of Ogoniland , which kicked off around eight years ago , is going well.

Civil trial expected to begin on Thursday at the High Court in London .

Hyprep was part-funded by oil companies including the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Company ( NNPC ) and Shell , which gave $ 350 m.

Internal documents suggest Shell and the Nigerian government were warned numerous times of Hyprep 's alleged fraudulent practices.

The BBC visited sites within the area and found crude oil oozing from the soil and floating on waters.

Locals say they have seen no benefit, only suffering from the discovery of oil.

They say oil companies, thieves and corrupt politicians have pumped their home for profit.

Patience Ogboe blames recent oil spills for her failing crops.

"Formerly if I harvest I can eat some with my family and even sell some," she says.
