Democrats in the state Legislature abruptly killed legislation that would have changed the rules for scheduling special elections in New York .

Republicans had alleged the move was being considered to try and weaken the GOP ’s thin majority in Congress .

It was proposed as the North Country congressional seat held by U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik is expected to open up soon after President Donald J. Trump has selected her to be his U.N. ambassador.

State Sen. Jim Tedisco asked his colleagues to codify the special election timeline in the state constitution.

He pointed specifically to the 2021 bill sponsored by state Sen. Zellnor Myrie and Assemblywoman Latrice Walker , which set the 10-day deadline for the governor to call special elections.

Among those slamming the proposed timeline change were the Republicans who hope to become Stefanik 's successor.
