Scientists analysed soil samples from farms in Yorkshire , Cumbria and West Sussex .

They found hedgerows stored 40 tonnes more carbon per hectare than grassland.

Data could be used to predict impact of planting new hedgers on UK 's net zero targets.

Study co-author said existing hedgers needed to be maintained to ensure carbon stored in the soil does not disappear into the atmosphere.
