President Donald Trump 's nominees have for some reason punted on this question.

They’ve done so even as it’s become a pretty standard question in these confirmation hearings.

Some have at least signaled they would be bound by the law, even if they didn’t directly answer the question.

But at least one other nominee has been willing to go there.

The question has been of keen interest even to Republican senators.

So why are Trump ’s nominees suddenly avoiding the kinds of direct answers their predecessors were happy to give? The obvious answer is that they don’t want to play into the premise that Trump would actually do these things.

Or perhaps they’re signaling that they plan to give Trump the benefit of any doubt.
