US children fall further behind in reading, make little improvement in math on national exam.
Among the few bright spots was an improvement in fourth grade math, where the average score ticked up 2 points on a scale of 500 .
One-third of eighth grade students scored below “basic” in reading.
The U.S. Education Department says the results are “heartbreaking” and reflect an education system that’s failing students despite billions of dollars in annual funding and more than $190 billion in federal pandemic relief.
Experts say social media and the rise of the screen-based childhood is doing for reading skills.
