Doomsday Clock will be updated at 10am EST ( 3pm GMT ) on Tuesday ( January 28 ) The symbolic clock edges closer to midnight to reflect human-made global catastrophes.

Since 2023 , it has been set at 90 seconds to midnight , but this year scientists say it could move forward to reflect the troubling global outlook.

The Russia -Ukraine war, Israel 's ongoing conflicts in the Middle East , and the threat of nuclear war and climate change all mean the clock could tick forwards for the first time in two years .

Experts say there is 'absolutely no reason' to move the clock further away from midnight .

The Doomsday Clock was created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1947 .

It was designed by a US artist to 'frighten men into rationality' The first editor of the journal decided whether or not the hands should be moved.

Since then, the hands have moved backwards and forwards since then.

In 2023 the hands were set at the closest they've ever been to midnight 90 seconds as humanity entered a 'time of unprecedented danger'.
