Auschwitz survivors return as world remembers Nazi death camp 80 years on

About 50 survivors of Auschwitz-Birkenau will return to the site on Monday to remember the day it was finally liberated on 27 January 1945 .

They will be joined by heads of state including King Charles , Emmanuel Macron of France and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier .

" Auschwitz was a laboratory for killing people. This was its task and it proved itself: few survived Auschwitz ," survivor Jona Laks says.

Almost a million European Jews were murdered here from 1941 to 1945 .

The dead also include some 70,000 Polish prisoners, 21,000 Roma and 15,000 Soviet prisoners of war.

Auschwitz drew 1.83 million visitors last year , although it is closed for the commemoration.
