•On the Road: Grumbling ice
74% Informative
Rumbles, grumbles, and booms were just barely audible over the wind blowing down the Travers Reservoir valley.
The far eastern end of the reservoir has big patches of open water so I figured that, with the relatively warm winter we’ve had so far, that might be the case now.
But there was no open water anywhere except where the canal that takes water over to nearby Little Bow Reservoir and a few places where the expanding ice had cracked and water had pushed to the surface.
Sounds that were a touch disconcerting as I made my way across the sandy shore and stepped onto the ice.
Feathers were everywhere, dark ones from Canada geese and ducks, a few white ones from the swans and snow geese that stop here on their way south.
The booms were strong enough that I could both hear them and feel their vibrations moving through ice as I stood taking my pictures.
