Yale graduate student Kevin Jiang , 26 , was shot in the street in New Haven , Connecticut , on Feb. 6, 2021 .

Jiang had been driving down the street when his car was struck from behind, and when he got out, possibly to exchange information with the other driver police say, that driver opened fire.

Jiang proposed to his girlfriend Zion Perry while on a hike to a waterfall in January 2021 .

A string of shootings in December 2020 , nearly two months before Jiang 's murder, were linked.

Qinxuan Pan , a graduate student from Malden , Massachusetts , was a person of interest in the murder of Jiang Jiang in New Haven , Connecticut .

Pan 's car was stolen from a car dealership, but his parents were not home when police arrived at his home with a warrant for his arrest.

The U.S. Marshals were able to locate and stop Pan 's parents, Hong Huang and Hao Hao .

U.S. Marshals tracked Qinxuan Pan's parents to Georgia in May 2021 .

Pan 's mother said she believed her son may have walked away and killed himself.

Police say Pan committed four shootings in order to mislead police into thinking it was just another incident in a string of random shootings.
