•The plane that could turn into a helicopter... Lockheed Flying CARR
49% Informative
The Lockheed Miracle helicopter plane was designed by the US Army to fly like a jet, but hover like a helicopter.
It arrived at 500 mph to the combat zone at 500mph and could fly into battle, perform its mission and zip out before the enemy was even the wiser.
The US Army needed a solution to the issue of losing pilots to the enemy.
Lockheed came up with some very unique helicopter concepts that could do the job called the CL945 stowed rotor aircraft.
The concept was shot to the Navy and a few mock ups were done in Navy livery.
It would have been able to carry two crew members and a side door that search and rescue teams could repel from to enter the jungle.
Lockheed wasn't just satisfied for military applications for the Army and Navy , but also suggested that it would have civil applications of this aircraft as well.
The CL954 could carry anywhere from 60 to 120 passengers between various cities along the US coast.
By 1967 , NASA recommended further engineering work to make a stowed rotor aircraft work.
The concept was also replicated on the other side of the Iron Curtain in the USSR .
