West End tenants say building owner's renovation proposal is designed to get them out, hike rents

70% Informative
The eight -storey apartment building at 2061 Beach Ave . has a great location on the West End waterfront.
The new owner of the building recently applied to the city to do a renovation, evict all the tenants, and reconfigure the structure.
A vacant, two -bedroom unit in the building is currently listed on the website Rentals.ca for $ 5,995 per month.
Current tenants say the building appears to be in excellent shape, and argue that the owner just wants to charge more rent.
In order to be able to evict tenants to renovate, the landlord must meet conditions set out in the Residential Tenancy Act.
The provincial Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs said it could not comment on specific cases for privacy reasons.
The province recently upgraded its tenant relocation package for evictions.
