When I was nine , my best friend was 30-year-old ingenue Lara Flynn Boyle .

She represented everything that America could be at its best: tough, beautiful, dangerous.

Her marriage to her father was presented as something to be ashamed of, inspiring tsk-tsk condemnation that belies the thrill of imagining such a life.

In me, Lara found a little girl who hated herself before puberty even. My mother could never understand it, because my mother was beautiful. Lara was also beautiful, but she suffered from the same perceived physical shortcomings I did: She was flat-chested and covered with freckles. As a gangly Irish American herself, she knew the pain of being an ugly girl. She told me stories about the time she had to wear knee socks to hide her scratched-up shins.

The public became so infatuated with Lara Boyle that, like the Eucharist , they swallowed her whole.

In her fantasy version of this story, Lara leaves our family because she knows I got what I needed.

In reality, I have no clue why my father and Lara broke up.
