•Keith Gerein: New year, new controversies heading to a breaking point for Edmonton Police Commission
67% Informative
Edmonton Police Commission is under pressure from the provincial government and council.
The provincial government has claimed more of the commission’s seats and appointed Anne-Marie Lambert .
The appointment of Renée Vaugeois and Dan Jones was mishandled by council.
Council should be allowed wide latitude in appointing who they want to hold the commission without interference.
A truly independent inquiry should not just focus on these two appointments but on all appointments and the whole police governance system.
It could be argued that Lambert is in a conflict because her day job as director of security for the Oilers Entertainment Group incentivizes her to maintain a good relationship with EPS .
The ongoing controversy can't go on, or it will ultimately impact the function of EPS and degrade our ability to attract quality candidates to be the next chief.
