B.C. will launch a new registry for short-term rental owners on May 1 .
The registry will require owners to pay a fee to help fund enforcement measures.
Conservative housing critic Kristina Loewen says the registry amounts to little more than a “cash grab” by the government.
Andy Yan , director of Simon Fraser University’s City Program , said the new registry is something that the NDP has promised to bring in.
Yan said it also makes sense as a way to regulate short-term rentals, just like the province and municipalities would do with any other business.
He is concerned about the fees being charged by the government.
