A biomedical engineer at the University of Michigan has found that just a fraction of all known bacteria species has ever been the main focus of a scientific research effort and subsequent paper.

Paul Jensen found that E. coli papers made up 21% of the total number of bacteria-focused papers in the database.

He suggests microbiologists need to broaden their research perspective in the coming years because there is still much to learn about other microorganisms.
