•US fortifying Indo-Pacific air bases against potential attacks from China
75% Informative
The U.S. Pacific Air Forces is investing in infrastructure and technology to enhance resilience and survivability of its bases and facilities across the theater.
A report last week by the Hudson Institute claimed that the United States aircraft at allied Indo-Pacific country bases could suffer major losses from Chinese attacks unless those bases are fortified.
China more than doubled the number of aircraft shelters since the early 2010s , having more than 3,000 , according to the report.
U.S. military bases in the region have almost no hardened aircraft shelters compared to Chinese military bases.
Disparity in number of shelters seems to stem from air superiority, analyst says.
Dispersing airfields are important against nuclear strikes, analysts say.
China traditionally feels it would lose air-to-air combat against the U.N. and therefore wants to shelter its aircraft on the ground.
