University of Connecticut researchers have created the first 3D maps of star-forming gas clouds in one of the most extreme environments in our galaxy.

The center of the Milky Way is an extreme environment where gas temperatures, densities, and turbulence are about 10 times higher than the rest of the galaxy.

Researchers used data from NASA 's Chandra X-ray Observatory spanning two decades to create their 3D models of the Stone and Sticks molecular clouds.

Model that reproduced observations with similar sized 'missing structures' indicated that the X-ray flare couldn't have been much longer than 45 months .

Pioneering approaches like this method to model molecular clouds in 3D are helping researchers glean more information about the conditions that lead to star formation.
