A study conducted by geochemists from UC Berkeley provided new evidence that high levels of oxygen were not crucial to the origin of animals.

The researchers discovered that oxygenated deep oceans happened between 540 and 420 million years ago .

The geologic effects of an increase in oxygen were evident from rocks exposed to the atmosphere which became red as the iron in it reacted with the oxygen to form iron oxides, similar to iron metal rusts.
