State Rep. Hillary Cassel and state Rep. Susan Valdes switched parties after losing a bitter race for chair of the Hillsborough County Democratic Party last month .

Valdes, now R-Tampa, said she could no longer remain in a party that doesn't represent her values.

Cassel said she disagreed with Gov. Ron DeSantis on “almost all issues.” Valdes and Cassel did not respond to requests for comment.

The Orlando Sentinel reached out to the seven Democratic state representatives and three state senators from Central Florida to ask them their opinions on the party switches and whether they would remain Democrats while in office.

That included the two Democrats who won the closest races in 2024 , state Rep. Leonard Spencer , D-Gotha, who won a district that voted for Trump , and State Sen. Kristin Arrington .
