In 2023 , Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy officially changed the Christmas holiday to Dec. 25 from the date observed by the Russian Orthodox Church in the Julian calendar.
The holiday was traditionally celebrated by many Eastern Orthodox Christians and Ukrainian Catholics with Christmas Eve on January 6 and Christmas Day on Jan. 7 .
For a second year , many Edmontonians with Ukrainian heritage are celebrating earlier instead.
