Osaka Metropolitan University researchers have devised a more accurate way of measuring an indicator of kidney function known as glomerular filtration rate (GFR) In diabetic nephropathy, albuminuria first appears, leading to a decrease in GFR .

The conventional method of correcting for body surface area in obese patients was determined to be inaccurate.

The researchers suggest calculating GFR without the correction but by taking into account age-related decline in renal function in kidney donor candidates.
