Two men suffered burn injuries on Friday ( January 3, 2025 ) after they tried to immolate themselves as protests erupted during a call for bandh in Madhya Pradesh’s Pithampur industrial town.

Demonstrators gathered at several places across the town, including the local bus stand and various junctions, to protest the disposal of the waste at an incineration facility in the industrial area.

The government transferred the waste to Pithampur for disposal after the Madhya Pradesh High Court pulled up authorities on December 3 and set a four-week deadline for the disposal. The waste is from the 1984 ’s deadly Bhopal gas tragedy when highly toxic methyl isocyanate gas got leaked from the factory on the intervening night of December 2 and 3 and claimed the lives of around 5,500 people in the immediate aftermath and caused disabilities and serious health problems to lakhs of people over the years .
