Kema Ward-Hopper was diagnosed with breast cancer a few months before her wedding in 2016 .

The couple and their daughter Aaralyn , now 15 , decided to move to Costa Rica after a series of devastating events led them to a new life in the country.

Costa Rica is the country's very own "blue zone," one of the regions where people live longest and are the healthiest.

Aaralyn Ward-Hopper and her family moved to Costa Rica after the global Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020 .

The family were granted permission to remain in Costa Rica on tourist visas.

Ward-hopper welcomed her son Nicolai at their home in Pueblo Nuevo .

Ward-Hopper and her husband and daughter all became permanent residents of Costa Rica after the birth of Nicolai , who is a Costa Rican citizen.

She says she's always touched to see the way in which the local families take care of each other, with the old taking care of the young and the young.

The family misses her “friends, family, and Amazon ,” and yearns for a traditional US winter .
