A 13-year-old girl from B.C. became the first critically ill pediatric patient with avian influenza in North America .
The teen contracted H5N1 earlier this fall and was treated for respiratory failure, pneumonia and acute kidney injury.
The case summary was published in a letter to the editor of the New England Journal of Medicine on Tuesday .
The girl was deemed to be no longer infectious the following day.
