Many of Britain ’s own professional middle classes would be much better off and have a higher standard of living if they moved to continental Europe .

We still like to fondly imagine that our rates of personal taxation and allowances are still not as draconian on higher earners as those found in most of Europe .

But the efforts of both the Starmer Government and the previous Conservative administrations mean that we have caught up with Europe in this unwelcome, downward race and have even started to surpass it.

So our professional on 165,000 , after paying for housing and for two children to go to independent school, will have approximately zilch (or under 300) left each month . Their Munich equivalent will have 20 times as much, over 6,000 , remaining to enjoy life. It’s a wonder anyone is left in London ..
