City of Edmonton invoked extraordinary emergency powers to quickly evacuate apartment building where security guard Harshandeep Singh was fatally shot this month .
Tenants living in the 36 -unit building at 10603 107 Ave. were given an “evacuation and relocation notice” Friday , saying their building will close indefinitely starting as early as Monday .
The notice cites “serious safety issues” to justify shuttering the building, but doesn’t explain what specific problems make this unprecedented and swift evacuation necessary during the holidays.
The city invoked section 551 of the Municipal Government Act .
The act gives the municipality sweeping emergency powers to “take whatever actions or measures are necessary” to eliminate an emergency.
Coun. Jo-Anne Wright hasn’t heard of anything like this happening before.
The closure and short turnaround on the Friday before Christmas is “concerning”.
