Ravens know exactly what they’re doing - everything they do seems to have a purpose.
One way, of course, is to hang out where they know it’s warm.
And one of the best places is anywhere there is flowing water.
The Bow River was thronged with mallards and mergansers, goldeneyes and geese .
The ravens were especially active, flying low along the river and dropping to the banks.
There’s a spot I know quite close to downtown where a tiny spring pops out of the ground and makes its way to a gravel bar in a bend of the Elbow River .
In the warmer months the area is thronged with all kinds of birds and other wildlife.
But in the winter , it attracts ducks and geese .
The big grain elevators on the edge of the Alyth Rail Yards always attract birds but they are especially attractive when the weather gets cold.
A flock of robins were gobbling down frozen fruit in a yard not far from the river.
