Divers from Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Germany discovered meter-high chimneys on the floor of the Dead Sea .
The structures were formed by the spontaneous crystallization of minerals from groundwater that had an extremely high salt content flowing out of the lake floor.
The discovery could be an important warning sign for sinkholes, which formed in the area that surrounded the lake and posed a hazard.
