•Dark energy mystery is finally SOLVED by radical new theory
82% Informative
Dark energy is a placeholder term scientists use to refer to whatever is causing the universe to expand faster over time.
But we don’t know exactly what dark energy is and no one has ever seen or measured it.
Now, scientists from the University of Canterbury , New Zealand , say they have finally cracked the puzzle with a radical new theory.
In a shock new paper, they say that dark energy isn't real after all.
Instead, new evidence supports the 'timescape' model of cosmic expansion.
This takes into account the fact that time itself moves much slower in the presence of a gravitational field.
Time moves slower within strong gravitational fields, such as the one around Earth .
The authors say that science will soon be in a position to prove that this model is correct. The European Space Agency's Euclid satellite, which was launched in July 203 , has the power to distinguish between the uniform expansion of the Friedman equation and the timescale alternative. While this will require at least 1,000 high-quality supernovae observations, it puts scientists within touching distance of solving one of the universe's biggest mysteries..
