How Trump and Elon Musk caused Congress' nightmare before Christmas

Elon Musk , the world’s richest man, spent more than $250 million getting Donald Trump elected.

The billionaire spent the past two days railing against a spending bill that would keep the government funded.

Trump 's team touts Musk 's role as an unelected official in the White House , but the bill's failure is a setback for Trump .

Some Democrats call Elon Musk the functional president-elect, while some GOP budget hawks call for him to replace Speaker Johnson as speaker.

“It appears that Elon Musk is trying to take the role as an unelected president. And in fact, Donald Trump , it appears, is following his orders,” Rep. Barbara Lee , D- Calif. , says.

House Speaker Johnson says he will regroup and come up with another solution.

The Trump -approved budget deal did include disaster relief for states ravaged by hurricanes Helene and Milton .

But it also removed a number of other provisions, and, significantly, Republicans did not consult Democrats in putting the new legislation together.

Democrats say Americans will be hurt because of the significant spending that was removed from the original deal.
