The moon may be more than 100 million years older than some scientists previously thought, according to a new study.
Lunar rock samples from the Apollo missions date back to an event that melted the moon's surface — not to the moment it formed.
The authors therefore think the moon formed around 4.51 billion years ago .
The evolution of the solar system was quite rapid, says Münker .
“Within just a few tens of millions of years , the whole array of celestial bodies as we know them today was formed,” he says.
We need a really good time resolution of these very early events,’ he said.
