House Democrats elected Rep. Gerry Connolly ( Virginia ) over Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ( New York ) to be the party’s top member on the powerful Oversight and Accountability Committee .
Lawmakers also chose Rep. Jared Huffman ( California ) to lead Democrats on the Natural Resources Committee .
In the run-up to the vote, younger lawmakers challenged two ranking Democratic members who have led their committees.
Connolly told colleagues that his 16 years on Oversight would help them push back against Trump without condemning all aspects of his agenda.
“We’ve got to be disciplined. We have to pick our battles.” Connolly said about his pitch that resonated with his colleagues.
