In December 1935 , a mining accident in Coalhurst ( about 15 kilometres north of Lethbridge ) left 16 men dead.
The accident touched the lives of virtually every one of the 1,200 residents in that town, including a young girl who reflected on the tragedy 70 years later for the following news story.
June Munroe (now June Clark ) remembers the chain of events vividly.
The Munroes lived in Coalhurst , Alberta , before the explosion of the mine in 1936 .
The Munroe family moved to Calgary after the explosion, but the town almost became a ghost town in the years after the blast.
June Munroe recalls her grandmother, Jemima McInnis , who instilled in her a hope and determination for a better life.
