•The Hallmark Christmas Movie Enters a New(ish) Era
72% Informative
Hallmark heads into the 15th anniversary of its Countdown to Christmas programming as the most-watched cable entertainment network of 2023 .
Nielsen reported in 2021 that nearly 80 million people had tuned into a Hallmark movie during that holiday season .
The network has recently begun toying with certain tropes in its modestly budgeted, expediently filmed films.
A former network casting director has made allegations of ageism.
Lacey Chabert was poached by Netflix this year for one of its holiday films.
"There’s a level of familiarity that our audiences crave for our audiences to see," says Hallmark 's executive.
In the age of edgier entertainment, the talent pipeline isn’t what it used to be.
“The frustration is that we used to have all those great shows of the ’90s, the Party of Fives . And the question is, How do you build the next Lacey ?’” says Daly .
Newer talent is pulled to Hallmark for all kinds of reasons.
