Prices for power in the window of 5pm to 6pm on the country’s day ahead market leapt to more than 900 per megawatt hour on Wednesday .

That was the highest level recorded in 18 years , according to data published by Epex Spot .

It came as chilly and low-wind conditions sent output from wind farms plunging to barely 3pc of installed capacity.

Low wind also blighted the UK , where the grid was reliant on gas to meet 63pc of demand.
