The Obama administration has no plans to authorize a bird flu vaccine, officials say.

The move means any decisions about a vaccine will likely be left to health officials in the incoming Trump administration.

The virus has been spreading in dairy cows since the spring and had infected at least 774 herds in 16 states.

Almost all bird flu cases have been in farmworkers who have had contact with infected animals.

Dr. William Schaffner , an infectious diseases expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center , said there isn’t a need to authorize a vaccine at this time.

Existing tools, such as antivirals and personal protective equipment, are sufficient enough right now, he said.

Dr. Keith Poulsen , director of the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory , also said it’s not necessary.
