Gerstell said he could imagine a process similar to UL certification, a safety organization’s seal of approval.
A private organization or a government regulator could check that Chinese -made electronics aren’t built with surveillance capabilities, he said.
He acknowledges that these ideas might not be perfect or workable, but “a lot better than what we have now” — which is to try to ban some Chinese technologies while ignoring others.
