Ragheed al-Tatari was jailed by the Assad regime in 1981 after refusing to bomb civilian areas.
The 69-year-old was freed from Tartou prison on Sunday as rebels deposed al-Assad's government.
His son, Waill , 43 , shed tears of joy after a brief phone call with his father.
He said: 'I'm really, really excited and happy that he's out. It's been 43 years and now finally he's free'.
