Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohiedmontonjournal
•Keith Gerein: As Edmonton's finances keep constricting, Sohi finds a bit of budget breathing room
69% Informative
Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi proposed amendments to shave a couple percentage points off next year ’s tax hike.
The mayor took a sip of water as he started to read a lengthy omnibus motion into the record, but wound up in a coughing fit that forced him to start the whole thing over.
The amendments are expected to save $ 65-$70 next year for the average homeowner from the original proposal, though a 6.1% tax hike is still the sixth highest since the 2000s began.
City finances will continue to be a crucial storyline heading toward next fall ’s election.
I’ll have more to say about the budget debate in a subsequent column.
On that front, there is something to like about the mayor's work here, but only time — and voters — will tell if it offers sufficient breathing room or more hiccups for his political plans.
