•Varcoe: 'An egregious overstep' — Private sector launches lawsuit against Ottawa's Bill C-59
66% Informative
Two private-sector business groups launch lawsuit against federal government over truth-in-advertising provisions in Bill C-59 .
Alberta Energy Minister Brian Jean welcomes the lawsuit, calling the bill undemocratic” and “extreme” Bill C59 includes amendments to the federal Competition Act to prevent greenwashing, requiring businesses to substantiate certain environmental claims.
Alberta government has said the bill seeks to muzzle the energy industry from speaking out.
A statement of defence in the case has not been filed.
Greenpeace Canada says the bill only requires companies to be truthful about their green claims.
The amendments to C-59 were introduced to hold all businesses to the same standard.
The lawsuit notes three different mechanisms already exist within the Competition Act to address false and misleading statements.
