The song was written by the Village People’s lead singer, Victor Willis , who is straight and producer Jacques Morali who is gay.
The Village People are a disco group of predominantly gay men who symbolize American masculinity and macho gay-fantasy personas.
Willis refutes the idea that Morali gave him the idea for the song in his Facebook post.
Jones said he knew nothing about the Y being a hang out for gays when he wrote the lyrics to Y.M.C.A. and Jacques Morali (who was gay) never once stated such to him.
