•Keith Gerein: Edmonton needs a major reset on police governance, but who will lead the changes?
67% Informative
It's fair to say Dale McFee's time with the top badge has been a product of the tumultuous, politically polarized era we live in.
The most controversial part of the police chief’s tenure has been the ongoing tension with city council and other progressive figures in town.
McFee rejects the suggestion that his stance is political — he insists his advocacy is limited to public safety.
Keith Gerein : I am at the point of wondering whether our polarized politics makes the notion of independent governance even possible anymore.
The UCP government, for one, doesn’t seem to have faith in that model, as evidenced by their recent moves to control more of the appointments to the police commission.
This appears to be a power play to better influence the choice of the next police chief and insulate them from opposing voices.
