The Naugatuck Valley Planning Region , a county equivalent of other places in Connecticut , swung back 4.7 percentage points toward Trump in November .
The manufacturing base that powered Waterbury and 18 other cities and towns evaporated decades ago , leaving small fabricators in bedroom communities angling for an economic reset.
For decades , Waterbury was the world leader in the production of brass, an alloy so integral to its success that it is featured in the city’s official motto, “ Quid Aere Perennius ?”.
Olivo said his switch to the Republican Party is permanent, but he still lives in a Democratic -heavy region of the country.
He said he hopes that Democrats ’ values will begin to more closely reflect those of the people in his community.
“A lot of Democrats are not woke people,” he said.
