Mexican migrant worker Pedro arrived in Canada from Guanajuato , Mexico , in 2018 under Canada ’s Temporary Foreign Worker program.
His current contract set to expire on January 18 , and no signs of renewal, he said his future in Canada is now uncertain.
Most of the approximately 8,000 temporary workers hired each year at farms and greenhouses in Leamington and Kingsville .
Pedro applied for an open work permit following his injury, but his request was denied.
The Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers Association has been lobbying the federal government for more flexibility for farms and to the temporary foreign worker program.
The association says it does not support employers who “mistreat or take advantage” of their workers.
