More than a Big Mac: Ronald McDonald Houses have helped families for 50 years

The first Ronald McDonald House opened its doors in Philadelphia on Oct. 15, 1974 .

Today , there are more than 400 houses and more than 270 family rooms in hospitals across the U.S. and around the world.

Families get transportation to and from medical facilities, chef-prepared meals at the house.

"They will talk about your family's needs, if there are any unmet needs, even before this crisis crisis," CEO says.

The goal is to provide wraparound care wherever possible, co-founder says.

Families dealing with a child's medical crisis "are experiencing high levels of depression and anxiety," she says.

Being with other families going through the same challenges builds a sense of hope, of togetherness.

The Sanchez family expects to remain in Philadelphia until at least February .
