Distractions significantly delay remote drivers' reaction time.
Researchers found that mental disengagement, achieved through a reading task distraction, significantly slowed the remote driver's reaction time by an average of 5.3 seconds when the driverless vehicle system required intervention.
Disengagement resulted in a 4.2 second delay in decision-making time for remote drivers when they needed to make critical strategic decisions.
This is one of the first studies to assess remote drivers' behaviour when teleoperating automated vehicles.
